Also, the readers of First Case will laugh and be impressed with the ending. At first I though First Case, was about a mafia family due to the reference of 'family business'. However, this was not the case, 'family business' refers to law enforcement family.
I am impressed with the way Roger Stelljes portrays his characters. Readers of First Case will learn about how to be it feels to be a new detective and how to win over your work colleagues.
Also, readers will learn that you can not keep a secret in the workplace, you are always eventually found out. I recommend this book. Michael McKenzie “Mac” McRyan had it all. A former University of Minnesota Gopher hockey player, he was a good-looking law school graduate married to a beautiful lawyer.
They had money, a big house, and an auspicious future. Then two of his cousins, police officers in a long line of McRyan cops, were killed in the line of duty, and Mac gave up his promising legal career to follow in his late father’s footsteps and become a homicide detective. I first hit upon this author when I noted that he is a Minnesotan, and I am always interested in local writers. I don’t find his writing as stimulating or compelling as a couple of my other favorite Minnesota authors, I think his storytelling is solid, his characters convincing, and his plots entertaining. First Case is Mac’s initiation into homicide investigation after four years as a street cop. Is it realistic that he is given full reign on his first case and that his instincts are dead on?
Maybe, maybe not. He is definitely given the benefit of the doubt because of his genealogy. His dad was practically a saint in the department. When a hard-working, hard-playing lawyer is found dead in the alley behind a bar, Mac and his partner start asking questions. Is the killer someone related to his law cases, or is he an angry husband or boyfriend? Stelljes kept me guessing as Mac went back and forth, examining all angles. There are some personal issues in this book as well.
I was somewhat surprised by the level of emotion – I would have expected more, considering the circumstances. But First Case is primarily a police procedural, and the writing is straightforward with a well-constructed plot. The solution was unexpected, if a bit unrealistic. I give the author points for creativity, however. If you’re looking for a quick read on a Sunday afternoon, pick up First Case.
Mac McRyan is worth getting to know. I am one of those readers who can't start a series at the second or third book.
I have to read them in order if I know previous books in the series exist. First Case was written after the first book in the McRyan mystery series but I hadn't discovered the author yet, so I started with the first short story.
What I liked: Since I had no expectations and short stories are well, short; I really enjoyed the background on the protaganist, Michael McRyan (known as 'Mac'). I had never read a 3.5 Stars!!! I had never read any books by Mr. Stelljes and First Case gave me a sampling to see if I should continue. All of this came about because the third book in the series came to my attention as a free Kindle deal, before I rush in to obtain a free book, I now do my homework.
I went crazy with free offerings when I first received my Kindle and was very disappointed in some of my book deals. Now, I research before I click the 'get it free' button. Mac is written as a very idealistic character but extremely savvy. (He also has a law degree, which the book explains why he's not a lawyer. He's extremely smart and picks up on the slightest clues.
The thing I enjoyed most was the characters thought process and sense of fairness. In addition, Mac is a bulldog when he gets the bit between his teeth.
I also really enjoyed the secondary characters, Mac's partner, Richard Lich (Dick Lick) and the Police captain and commissioner are solidly behind their cops. What I didn't like: It's hard to find something in such a short book not to like especially if the author is halfway decent writer. So, yeah, I just enjoyed the book.
I'm extremely glad I read First Case before starting the series as the background on Mac and his thought process is critical to the series. Recommended - start with this one before the first full length novel, The St Paul Conspiracy.

I am looking forward to starting the next book in the series, Electing to Murder. If you like a good old cops and robbers book, USA style, then you will probably enjoy this one. This is the first in a series, so you have others to follow it. So, as usual, I looked into the book and its reviews, discovered it to be part of a series that looked interesting, and bought the whole series. (Yes, I know, that's the idea of offering the freebie, right?) But see, I'm a stickler for starting at the beginning of a series if at all possible; I hate reading book #3 and finding out about something that I wouldn't have known if I'd started at book #1. Or book #.5, in this case. The main character, Michael 'Mac' McRyan is a 30-something lawyer turned policeman turned recent detective.
This is his first case as a detective. (Duh, the name!) Mac comes from a line of policemen, including his famous detective father. Mac decided he wanted to pursue the family business from the lawyer side, and he was about to go into private practice when two of his cousins, both policemen, were killed in the line of duty. Mac put aside his law career and became a policeman. He's now paired with Richard Lich (known as 'Dick Lick' to most), a veteran detective who has a bit extra around the middle and 2 bad divorces behind him. Dick is OK with working with Mac and even letting him take the lead, at times.
In fact, everyone seems to like Mac, and it's not all because of his father or the family; I appreciated that. The homicide victim is a young associate at a big law firm, who's known for two things: the hours he bills and the women he. The guy doesn't care if what the relationship status is of the women he 'dates', since the dates focus strictly on one thing. So there are a lot of potential suspects. I really like that the author doesn't 'cheat' by keeping a key piece of evidence hidden or only talked about, as in, 'the detective balked when he saw X', and if we don't know what 'X' is, there's no way we can figure out whodunnit. Sure, there are plenty of red herrings and twists, even in this novella.
But the readers discover things in almost real-time to Mac and his partner's discoveries. There is every opportunity to 'solve' the whodunnit at the same time or slightly before.
I really like that! And I especially like the dead lawyer's catch phrase about 'using everything tool in his toolbox' and how that plays into the solution. My only nit is more like a puzzlement to me. See, I spent from 9-18 growing up in rural Minnesota, which is now pretty much a suburb of the Twin Cities, even though the area is located 1 hour north. I grew up as a military brat and then as a police brat. So I.know. that Minnesota and the Twin Cities are made up mostly of Germans and Swedes; yet the police force in this series seems to be made up mostly of Irish.
OK, yes, things run in families. And perhaps it's only because of who is mentioned in the books, but I seem to be missing the Germans and Swedes on the force?
![Stelljes Stelljes](/uploads/1/2/4/0/124080728/468365434.jpg)
Silly little thing. I don't mind that Mac is Irish, or that his father and family are mostly cops and retired cops.
Or that they run the local cop bar. All that makes sense. I just wondered how the Chief and several of the 'key' policemen seem to be Irish in a predominantly German and Swedish place?
Not a big deal, really - like I said, more like a puzzlement, especially since the author's last name appears to be Scandinavian in origin. But it can't be easy to write about your home town, try to avoid 'Mary Sue-ing', and keep everyone happy. So it's a pass. Definitely interested in this series. An easy entertaining murder mystery, just the way I like it. There are a couple of holes but noting to make it seem unrealistic.

The “McRyan Mysteries” series is written by lawyer by day and author by night, Roger Stelljes and the series is about a homicide detective named Mac McRyan. He is a fourth generation cop with the St. Paul police department. He does not have to work, due to the fact that he is independently wealthy. Later on in the series, Mac moves with his girlfriend, Sally, to the nation’s capital, where she works for the President of the United States. This series of novels is a bestselling series that has made both the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. It has also been downloaded over two million times for different electronic reading devices all around the world.
The series is made up of both novels and a shorter work that serves as a prequel to the series. “Fatally Bound” by Roger Stelljes is the fourth novel in the “McRyan Mysteries” series that came out in 2014. After the FBI spend quite awhile looking into the murders of three people, a couple of people push Mac to take the case and provide a fresh perspective on things. As he may see something that others have overlooked and missed. Once again, Mac McRyan is on a case and on the hunt for a killer. This time, the killer is in the form of a man that is killing women after pressing a soaked rag to her face and holding her down.
He leaves very little, if any, evidence. McRyan has Dara Wire to help him investigate. He is now living in Washington D.C. His girlfriend Sally. Their hunt for this killer will test the partnership that they have tried to forge together and put them both in harm’s way. Fans of the novel enjoyed the book and found it to be yet another great novel from Stelljes.
Others liked how great the novel was paced and how well drawn the characters are in the novel. There is a great sense of humor here and a great mystery to get to the heart of in this one.
The characters and action in the novel jumps right off the page and Stelljes is great at allowing you to make a movie of the events in your head. Fans want to get their hands on more books in this intriguing and thrilling series. Due to the fact that fans cannot get enough, they include it in their must read group. Some did not like that the character Mac is just a good guy without that many flaws to him and they found themselves actually rooting against Mac here. There were times that Mac and Wire talk to each other and it feels just like some fill in type stuff just to pass the time. There were even, for some, to be some editing problems that detracted from what Stelljes was trying to say and distracted them from the story. There were some that feel up until the end, there was some good things going on, but the novel has a rushed ending to it that was a let down.
“Blood Silence” by Roger Stelljes is the fifth novel in the “McRyan Mysteries” series that came out in 2015. A high powered lawyer and a gorgeous client of his are killed in a brutal way while they are in a lake house located in a suburb that is west of Minneapolis. At the same time, Mac has taken an invite for a party in Minnesota for the president’s birthday; he likes that he will be able to see all of the people he knew when he was a cop in St. Another case pops up that took place thousands of miles away, and the only thing that the two murder cases have in common is Mac McRyan himself. His ex-wife, Meredith, has a new husband and proof that he has been cheating, but does not expect that she will be framed for his murder. There are also certain details of this case that will force Mac to face events of his past.
He must do all of this as he and Sally prepare to get married. Fans of the novel were glued to the novel and found themselves reading it non stop to finish it.
Stelljes writes gripping page turners that leave you only needing the edge of your seat. They found the story to be very interesting, especially the way that Mac was able to put the pieces of this one together to solve the case and catch the bad guy. Some readers liked the shifting perspective of the novel as well as the twist at the end.
Fans cannot wait for more books in the series. Some found that the novels actually get better and better each time out. Readers keep wondering how will Stelljes be able to top the great novel that came before, but he keeps on delivering wonderful reads for his many fans. Stelljes is also able to capture the atmosphere of Minnesota and makes it feel as if you yourself are there right alongside for the ride with Mac while he is tracking down the killer. Some enjoyed the way that Sally and Mac’s relationship grows in this one. Some did not like the way that the novels detract from what the early novels did well, which was Mac solving interesting and violent murders, but in these it turns into a romance with some murder solving.
There were readers who thought that some of what Stelljes says in this book against fossil fuels and things has just gotten started but has been going since around the fifties. Readers found themselves bored and pushed themselves to finish this novel after a slow start and what they took to be some filler material. The first novel in the series “The Saint Paul Conspiracy” won the Commercial Fiction Award from MIPA Merit in the year 2006. The series is for fans of John Sandford’s novels as well as for fans of the crime and thriller genres. The series is one that is not to be missed by anyone looking for a thrilling read.

How do series work? To create a series or add a work to it, go to a 'work' page. The 'Common Knowledge' section now includes a 'Series' field. Enter the name of the series to add the book to it. Works can belong to more than one series. In some cases, as with, disagreements about order necessitate the creation of. Tip: If the series has an order, add a number or other descriptor in parenthesis after the series title (eg., 'Chronicles of Prydain (book 1)').
By default, it sorts by the number, or alphabetically if there is no number. If you want to force a particular order, use the character to divide the number and the descriptor.
So, '(0 prequel)' sorts by 0 under the label 'prequel.' What isn't a series? Series was designed to cover groups of books generally understood as such (see ). Like many concepts in the book world, 'series' is a somewhat fluid and contested notion. A good rule of thumb is that series have a conventional name and are intentional creations, on the part of the author or publisher.
For now, avoid forcing the issue with mere 'lists' of works possessing an arbitrary shared characteristic, such as relating to a particular place. Avoid series that cross authors, unless the authors were or became aware of the series identification (eg., avoid lumping Jane Austen with her continuators). Also avoid publisher series, unless the publisher has a true monopoly over the 'works' in question. So, the Dummies guides are a series of works. But the Loeb Classical Library is a series of editions, not of works.
